From a lifetime of working with his hands to discovering the unpredictable world of fluid art, Robbie's creative journey began after retirement.
After retiring, Robbie was looking for something creative to fill his time. He discovered fluid art through YouTube, watching videos and becoming fascinated by the extraordinary range of colours, techniques and ways of working with paint.
What attracted him was the unpredictability. Different paints, colours and techniques can be combined and altered in countless ways, and the final result is never completely known in advance. Every piece develops in its own way.
Robbie began by creating paintings and quickly found that he loved the process. Then he discovered people making fluid-art coasters on ceramic tiles, and that opened up another direction for his creativity.
Before long he was making more and more coasters and decided it was time to share them with other people.
Robbie trained as a carpenter when he left school. He later spent around 25 years in the motor trade before starting his own kitchen-fitting business. He ran the business until he retired a few years ago and eventually sold it.
Being able to make things has always been an important part of Robbie's life. Fluid art gave him a completely different way to use that practical side of himself, combining it with colour, experimentation and creativity.
Robbie began taking his coasters to local craft fairs and was delighted by how warmly people received them. He particularly enjoys meeting people who are interested in the work and being able to explain how the pieces are created.
Robbie loves the fact that no two pieces turn out exactly the same. Whether creating a painting or a ceramic coaster, the process is always part of the enjoyment — mixing colour, trying something different and discovering what appears at the end.
